Is that egg on your face Paul?

One of the things that excites me about the future of PerthNorg is there will come a time when the news on our site is mostly generated by our Cit Js.

We have seen some great exmples of this in the first few weeks that we have been live, probably the one that comes to mind first was a report by one of our Cit Js MickyLove on some Long-neck tortoises she found being trampled by traffic. A small story, some great pictures but really a media revolution unfolding…
With the rapid growth of the mobile media industry everybody has the ability to report on the events around them in real time and this revolution will define the media landscape of the future.

Mobile phones, which in effect are fast becoming portable personal computers, put the power of reporting into the hands of citizens. So instead of news being generated by a small pool of reporters the power shifts to all the citizens. They can record audio or video, take photos or file text stories about what is happening around them.

It was a point made earlier this week by the Australian head of Nokia Shaun Colligan at the Leadership Matters seminar put on by The West Australian on September 6.

The great irony is that the point was made in response to a question put to him by The West editor Paul Armstrong as to where these future technologies are heading. We’d love to provide you with a podcast but that would really be pushing things for our local rag.

Paul is still grappling with the term blog. So, and admittedly we weren’t there but we have heard the same from several sources, in response to the question, Colligan told Paul new technology would mean that instead of having one or two journalists reporting from their desks you would have thousands of reporters out there who could upload their stories to a blog.

Sound like something familiar? Being a former journalist at The West I would have loved to have been there for the bemused look on the audiences faces.

Anyway it made my day!
In the meantime see you round the Norg …
and don’t underestimate your power to make a difference.
